On January 29th, 2010, the anti-gay, anti-choice banker Harold Ford met with Vito Lopez and other members of the New York Assembly who represent Brooklyn in an effort to court their endorsement at Cono’s Pescatore in Williamsburg. Gay rights activist Jon Winkleman crashed the dining room chanting, “Anti-choice! Anti-gay! Snake Oil Harry go away!” Ford has voted against same-sex marriage three times, once as a Tennessee Assemblyman and twice as a Congressman supporting the Federal Marriage Amendment. Prior to his votes in Congress, he promised to oppose the FMA. He also voted in favor of the partial birth abortion ban. Gay rights activists refuse to be tricked again and pledge to join with pro-choice activists to ensure that Ford supporters know they are backing a sexist bigot and that this is unacceptable.

We need more zap actions like this, especially against candidates who have anti-gay and anti-choice voting records, such as Harold Ford. I would suggest more group actions, however, as they carry more clout than individual actions. Perhaps we should resurrect something like GAA, the Lavender Hill Mob, or ACT-Up to perform them. Kudos to Mr. Winkelman.
